Cranberry's Grocery & Eatery

About Us

Kathleen StinehartWe opened on the 4th of July in 2003. Founded by Kathleen Stinehart, former dean for academic outreach at nearby Mary Baldwin College, Cranberry’s goal is to bring you organic, natural, healthful and delicious foods.

We are all about taste (hooray!) and nutrition (whoopee!). Our menu is fashioned around fruits, vegetables and organic grains – simple but powerful foods that will have you leaping tall buildings in a single bound.

In 2004 we merged with the former Cool Spot coffee shop and began opening for breakfast as well as lunch. We are proud to be the exclusive outlet for locally-roasted Lester’s Best coffee beans and European-style espresso drinks.

In 2008 we were designated a “Virginia Green” business in honor of our on-going efforts to reduce our footprint. Currently we recycle plastic, glass, aluminum, newspaper, cardboard, plastic bags and egg cartons; have plants in the store – and screen doors – to aid air quality; use green cleaning products and compact fluorescent bulbs; avoid Styrofoam; and monitor our energy and water usage.

In 2009 we became a certified gluten-free restaurant, adding gluten-free bread & gluten-free desserts to our menu and dedicating a section of the kitchen to the preparation of gluten-free entrees.

All of us who work here believe the store really belongs to the customers. That’s why the menu and inventory reflect what Staunton-area shoppers, diners, and tourists are currently eating and buying.

We are a local, independent, family business, and we enjoy customers telling us what healing foods they like to eat and buy these days. Here’s to your health and a wonderful time at Cranberry’s!

“Your store is impressive, Kathleen! We think you’ve got a real hit on your hands.”
-Roussie & Larry Jacksina, customers

Store frontAbout the Building . . .

Our building was constructed in 1758 and may be the oldest commercial building in Staunton. Originally a stone structure, it now sports a brick façade added during the Victorian era to modernize its appearance.

Over the years the building has served as a women’s clothing store, New York deli, tailor’s shop, taxi garage, Chinese laundry, and general mercantile. The staff here is convinced there are friendly ghosts about. If you sense one, just smile and say “Hi”.
